Morning

This one just couldn't wait till tonight. Mark is completely off the respirator. They will leave the trach in for a while just in case. He is receiving extra oxygen in a mask to the trach. I also talked to the resident and they requested permission to schedule the placement of a permanent shunt for early to midweek if all continues to go well. After a couple of days of recuperation, he will then go off to rehab. All of his cultures have been clean for the last 4-5 days and his pneumonia continues to improve.

Excellent news!!! I can hear Chris's excitement in every word she writes. I never doubted that you would wake up when you were good and ready, Mark. Bryn Mawr Rehab better be ready for their next star patient to roll though their doors.

It's been nerve-wracking waiting for the news about Mark, even as I recognize that it was far worse for those directly around him. Thank you again and again to Chris for the frequent updates, and for creating this blog in the first place.

The wonderful part about all of this has been getting a glimpse into the other corners of Mark's life, interests and connections that I'd never known about. While we're still gathered here, I thought it would be nice to spend some time sharing our favorite Mark stories.

I met Mark at the same time that I met (my now husband) Ben in person for the first time. I didn't spend much time with Mark until he came to visit Ben and me in St. Augustine. I think it was that visit where he uttered the infamous line, "will there be MEAT?" in reference to the dinner we were having. I honestly thought there was meat in the bibimbap mix we'd gotten the other day, and so I said, "yes". Whatever meat there was clearly wasn't apparent to Mark, and I seem to recall opening up some Chinese canned fish. (This, thankfully, assuaged the carnivorous bear within Mr. Seymour.)

It took some time for me to get used to his style (I used to find him annoying and irritating, and put up with him for Ben's sake), but since then I've come to appreciate Mark's heart. He still has the most amazing knack for calling Ben at *just* the wrong time (when we're on the motorcycle, when we're stepping into the dinghy, just as Ben's about to go into a meeting...), but he's also always been there for me when I needed a sympathetic ear (and maybe a gruff talking to/setting straight, as well).

There isn't anyone else like Mark in my life...and sappy or not, I'm really glad for his presence.

Hi Chris,

Please tell Mark that he has been named TIME's Person of the Year.

Maybe THAT will wake him up!

Thank you so much for your care for Mark (and the rest of us by keeping us informed).

In one of the better 'Calvin&Hobbs', Calvin declares, "I know life is unfair; I just it to be unfair in my favor." I think we're seeing a sea-change, the tide has begun to run in Marks favor.
